About Us

The Hoffman family and Broken Circle Cattle Company
Our cattle are Desert Tough.
The 500 mother cows carrying the Broken Circle brand live in southern Idaho’s high desert. Our range runs from 3000-5000’ in elevation and averages 8" of annual precipitation - most of which falls in the winter. We typically have green grass for only 90-120 days. Our temperatures range from 0 to over 100 degrees. It’s not all steep and rocky – some of it is just rocky. If a cow or bull can earn their living here, they can earn it anywhere. They must travel well and be thrifty. Broken Circle cattle have to be tough - Desert Tough!

We stand behind our cattle.
When our cattle leave our ranch they are healthy and prepared to stay that way – free of parasites and effectively immunized. We perform the tests that are available to measure fertility and we guarantee that our bulls, heifers, cows and steers are healthy on arrival and able to perform in the roping arena or on the range.

We stand beside our business partners – our customers.
We believe that customer satisfaction, repeat business and long-term partners are essential to our success and yours.
We believe prices should reflect an animal’s ability to create profits and be fair to both sides. If problems arise, we will seek to resolve them in a manner that keeps you as our customer.
Our breeding program is focused on our profit and yours.
Although the publicity and sales opportunities associated with the show-ring are appealing, the majority of Corriente breeders make most of our money selling roping stock. And most of us devote most of our budget to maintaining the herd of mother cows. We seek the optimal mix of the following important profit traits, roughly in order of priority:
- Efficiency
- Fertility
- Longevity
- Roping performance
- Show ring conformation
- Carcass value
See Our Breeding Program.
We are fully committed to Corriente cattle.
We are not new to the cattle business and it is not a hobby to us. Ted has owned and managed cattle for over 3 decades and also is a veterinarian. Kate traded wages for heifers when she was 10 and also has a degree in both Range and Livestock Management. We had a very successful beef operation but we sold that herd because the Corriente breed offered more profit today and increasing opportunity in the future. We depend upon our Corrientes to carry Broken Circle Cattle Company to the next generation.
Come see us anytime.
It is probably clear to you by now that we are fascinated by the process of turning sunlight, dirt and a little bit of water into cattle, meat and jobs; and sustainable resource management and economic activity for our community. We’d like to show you how we run this outfit and hear how you run yours. Helping each other succeed will reflect well on the breed and our association, and will enhance the bright future before us with this unique breed.
